NIGERIA AT 66: HON. IBRAHIM AKINTAYO SAYS NATION'S PROGRESS REQUIRES COLLECTIVE EFFORT, RESPONSIBLE LEADERSHIP AND COMMITMENT TO PEACEFUL COEXISTENCE.

IBADAN, Oyo State, 1 October 2026.

The Executive Chairman of Ibadan North East Local Government, Hon. Engr. Ibrahim Akintayo (OMUYES), has congratulated Nigerians on the 66th anniversary of the country's independence. He said the nation's progress depends on collective effort, responsible leadership and a firm commitment to peaceful coexistence.

In his Independence Day message, Hon. Akintayo said the anniversary is a time for gratitude and sober reflection, not only celebration.
"Sixty-six years after independence, we thank Almighty God for keeping this nation together through its trials and triumphs.

We also honour the founding fathers who laboured for the freedom we enjoy today," he said.
He stressed that national development cannot be left to government alone. "Nigeria will move forward when every citizen, in the market, the classroom, the mosque, the church, the farm and the public office, plays his or her part with honesty and diligence," he said.
On leadership, Hon. Akintayo said those entrusted with public office must see their positions as a sacred trust. "Leadership is service. Those of us in government must be responsible, accountable and close to the people, because the true measure of leadership is the impact felt in the lives of ordinary citizens," he stated.

He also urged Nigerians to hold on to peace and tolerance despite their differences in ethnicity, religion and political affiliation. "Our diversity is our strength, not our weakness. Without peace and understanding among us, no meaningful development can last," he said.

Hon. Akintayo prayed for the nation's continued unity, peace and prosperity, and called on residents of Ibadan North East to remain law-abiding and to keep working for the good of their communities. He also assured them of his administration's continued commitment to grassroots development and service delivery.
He wished all Nigerians a happy Independence Anniversary.
