Democracy Day: Akintayo calls for unity, prayers amid national security concerns
…urges support for democratic values.
The Executive Chairman of Ibadan North-East Local Government, Hon. Ibrahim Akintayo (O mu Yes), has called on residents of Ibadan North-East Local Government and Oyo State at large to remain committed to democratic values, unity and peaceful coexistence as the nation marks the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.
In a statement signed by the Council’s Information Officer, Ikeoye Oyetoro, the Chairman described June 12 as a historic milestone in Nigeria’s democratic journey and a reminder of the sacrifices of patriots who fought for the will of the people and the sustenance of democratic governance.
Hon. Akintayo paid tribute to the heroes of democracy whose sacrifices made Nigeria’s present democratic system possible, noting that their courage and commitment to the will of the people laid the foundation for the democratic freedoms and governance being enjoyed in the country today.
The Chairman noted that this year Democracy Day offers an opportunity for sober reflection on the nation’s democratic journey, urging citizens to continue to support efforts aimed at strengthening democratic institutions and promoting peace, unity and development at all levels of government.
The Chairman expressed concern over the prevailing security challenges in the country, particularly the abduction of students and teachers in some parts of Nigeria, including Oyo State, describing the situation as painful and deeply worrying.
“As we mark this year’s Democracy Day, our thoughts and prayers are with the students, teachers and other innocent Nigerians who are still in captivity. We pray for their safe return, comfort for their families, and success for all efforts aimed at securing their release. We also pray for peace and stability across our nation,” he said.
The Council Boss urged residents to remain law-abiding, peaceful and united, stressing that democracy can only thrive in an atmosphere of security, mutual respect and collective responsibility.
The Chairman reaffirmed the commitment of the Ibadan North-East Local Government to grassroots development and people-oriented governance in line with the vision of the Oyo State Government under Governor Seyi Makinde.
