OYO 2027: SUSTAINING MAKINDE'S LEGACY: WHY OTUNBA OLUSEYE OPATOKI IS THE BEST SHOT. By Alhaji Musa Muhammad.
When Governor Seyi Makinde assumed office in 2019, Oyo State embarked on a transformational journey; a journey defined by infrastructure revival, fiscal prudence, social investment, and an unwavering commitment to good governance. As the political horizon of 2027 draws closer, the central question is no longer whether Makinde's legacy deserves to be sustained; it does, without question, but who possesses the character, capacity, and credibility to carry that torch forward.
Among the aspirants and emerging voices within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State, one name stands out with quiet but compelling distinction: Otunba Oluseye Opatoki.
A PHILANTHROPY ROOTED IN GENUINE SERVICE:
Long before the current season of political ambition, Otunba Oluseye Opatoki had already written his name across the lives of ordinary Oyo State citizens through acts of philanthropy that needed no camera, no podium, and no electoral calendar. His giving was not the performative generosity of a man testing the waters of public opinion — it was the sustained, consistent, and deeply personal investment of a man who understands that governance begins long before the swearing-in ceremony.
This is important. Makinde's administration succeeded in part because the Governor entered office already habituated to results — a man who had built things, managed resources, and delivered value outside of government. Otunba Opatoki mirrors this profile in significant ways.
CONTINUITY WITHOUT STAGNATION:
Sustaining a legacy does not mean frozen continuity. It means building intelligently upon a foundation while responding to the evolving needs of the people. Otunba Opatoki's vision for Oyo State speaks to exactly this balance, honouring the gains of the Makinde era in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and security, while bringing fresh energy and new ideas to deepen those gains and extend their reach to communities still waiting for their share of development.
Under Governor Makinde, Oyo State witnessed the revival of road infrastructure across all geopolitical zones, significant improvement in primary healthcare delivery, the restoration of workers' welfare, and a measurable improvement in the state's internally generated revenue. Any credible successor must demonstrate the will and the competence to deepen these dividends; and Otunba Opatoki has shown, through his public conduct and grassroots engagements, that he understands what is at stake.
THE PDP FAITHFUL DESERVE A WORTHY STANDARD-BEARER:
The Peoples Democratic Party in Oyo State has been the vehicle of progressive governance in recent years. Its members from ward level to state have made enormous sacrifices to build and defend the party's electoral dominance. They deserve a flagbearer who is not merely an opportunist, but a committed party man whose loyalty to PDP ideals is tested and true.
Otunba Oluseye Opatoki is such a man. His roots within the party run deep. His relationships across the party structure from local government caucuses to the state executive are built on mutual respect and shared purpose. He is not a stranger asking the party for a lift; he is a stakeholder asking his family to trust him with responsibility.
CHARACTER IN AN AGE OF DOUBT:
Perhaps the most important question voters and delegates will ask in 2027 is a simple one: Can I trust this person? In an era of political cynicism, that question carries enormous weight.
Otunba Opatoki has built, over years, a reputation for integrity; a man whose word is his bond, whose handshake closes deals, and whose name is spoken with respect in boardrooms and market squares alike. That dual legibility, equally fluent in elite policy circles and in the language of the everyday Oyo citizen is a rare and precious political asset.
CONCLUSION: THE TIME IS NOW
Governor Makinde has set a high bar. Oyo State deserves a successor equal to that standard; someone who will not squander the goodwill the PDP has earned, not reverse the progress that has been achieved, and not disappoint the millions who have dared to believe that governance in Nigeria can be different.
Otunba Oluseye Opatoki is that person. He is prepared. He is credible. He is connected to the people. And most importantly, he is ready to serve.
The best way to honour a legacy is to build upon it. Oyo State, the time is now.
