Democracy Day: Ex-Oyo APGA Governorship Candidate, Adeshina Calls for Electoral Reformations and Better Nigeria

As Nigeria marks another Democracy Day on June 12, the 2023 governorship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Oyo State, Comrade Adeshina Adewale Excel, has called for an urgent reform of the country’s democratic system, which he described as “bleeding.”

In a statement commemorating the day, Adeshina, who also serves as the National President of the Human Rights Report Commitment of Nigeria, lamented the growing hardship faced by Nigerians under the current democratic dispensation.

He argued that democracy, by design, should improve citizens’ lives, but said the reverse is the case in Nigeria today.

“Democracy should bring better living conditions for Nigerians, but instead, it has become a source of suffering,” he said.

On a recent bill in the National Assembly that proposes compulsory voting, Adeshina stressed that the focus should instead be on making every vote count.

“If the government is truly serious about democracy, it must ensure that the votes of Nigerians count. We should look back at the June 12 election as a model of transparency and integrity in the electoral process,” he added.

He also criticized the culture of political opportunism, where politicians switch parties for personal gain rather than public service.

“You cannot be performing poorly and expect automatic tickets or guaranteed wins just by decamping. In 2027, Nigerians will stand firm and defend their votes. Electoral reform and voter education are the way forward,” the APGA chieftain said.

Adeshina called on all levels of government and well-meaning Nigerians to put the interests of the people first, noting that sustainable development can only happen when leaders are truly accountable to the electorate.

The 2023 governorship candidate of All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) in Oyo State, Comrade Adeshina Adewale Excel has appealed to Nigerian government to reform bleeding democracy of the nation.
