ORANYAN MARKET FIRE DISASTER : LG CHAIRMAN AKINTAYO, APM GUBER CANDIDATE ADEKANMBI VISIT SCENE, COMMISERATE WITH TRADERS
Ibadan, Oyo State — August 26, 2026.
The Executive Chairman of Ibadan North East Local Government, Hon. Engr. Ibrahim Akintayo (OMUYES), alongside the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) governorship candidate in Oyo State, Hon. Bimbo Adekanmbi, on Wednesday visited the scene of the devastating fire that razed several sections of the popular Oranyan Market, to commiserate with affected traders and assess the extent of the damage.
The inferno, which broke out around midnight on Sunday, August 23, tore through sections of the market dealing in gold, furniture, second-hand clothing and other goods, with reports indicating that close to 300 shops were affected. The Oyo State Fire Service has said a definitive figure on the scale of destruction will only be confirmed after a full assessment.
During the visit, Engr. Akintayo and Hon. Adekanmbi moved round the affected sections of the market, interacting with traders and listening to accounts of their losses. The Council Boss, Engr. Akintayo, promised that the local government would render necessary assistance to the affected traders as they begin the process of recovery.
Speaking in the same vein, Hon. Adekanmbi prayed that such an occurrence would never happen to the traders again, and pledged to be of help to those affected. He further committed to making the necessary contributions towards rebuilding the market structure, assuring traders that their plight would not be overlooked.
The visit adds to the wave of concern trailing the incident, which local authorities and stakeholders have attributed to Ibadan's recurring vulnerability to market fires — Oranyan Market itself having recorded a previous major fire in its herbal section in 2024.
