ORANYAN MARKET INFERNO: OYO LAWMAKER, HON. ENGR. ABIODUN BABALOLA PhD ("MR. INTEGRITY") VISITS AFFECTED TRADERS, PLEDGES LEGISLATIVE INTERVENTION
The Member representing Ibadan North East Constituency 01 in the Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon. Engr. Abiodun Babalola PhD, popularly known as "Mr. Integrity," today paid a sympathy visit to traders affected by the devastating fire outbreak that razed sections of the popular Oranyan Market in the early hours of Monday, following an inferno that started late Sunday night, August 23, 2026.
The fire, which reportedly broke out around midnight, gutted several shops within the market, leaving traders in gold, furniture, second-hand clothing, and other goods counting heavy losses running into millions of naira.
Speaking during the condolence visit, Hon. Babalola commiserated with the affected traders over the huge losses suffered, describing the incident as a painful setback to the hardworking men and women who depend on the market for their livelihoods.
"My heart goes out to every trader who has lost goods and means of livelihood to this unfortunate incident," Hon. Babalola said.
"As your representative, I stand with you in this trying period, and I will not relent in pursuing measures at the House of Assembly that will help prevent a recurrence of such disasters in our markets."
The lawmaker pledged to engage relevant authorities and push for legislative intervention aimed at improving fire safety infrastructure and emergency response across markets in the constituency and beyond.
He prayed that such an unfortunate occurrence would not repeat itself, and called for proactive measures to safeguard traders and their means of livelihood in the future.
Hon. Babalola urged the traders to remain hopeful and resilient, assuring them of his continued support and representation at the state legislature.
